Tim Spahr checking in

Hi from Kansas City.

Wanted to drop a quick note to everyone.

Here in Kansas City we survived another ice storm, I have sent a couple of photos of what it looked like after the storm on 12-12-07.

We are all doing fine in KC, great to see Pam getting around the country and seeing all the old gang, great photos, looks like everyone is doing great.

I have also sent a photo of a clown and his grand kids at Halloween (yes Halloween I do not wear this all the time).

That's it for now, we all in KC wish all of you who read this a Very Happy Holidays.

Tim and family from Kansas City.

You don't KNOW what cold is!!

This morning as my daughter Jenn and I left our hotel to head to the Mall of America the temperature outside was -4 degrees. That's not a dash in front of the 4 - it was MINUS 4 degrees! Why do you people live here???

I will admit it has been worth it though - I got to see both DeEtta and Pat, AND we got to meet Pat's daughter and husband. Pat's daughter is also pregnant and she is due almost exactly the same time as my daughter Jenn. We had a great time catching up and enjoying a few adult beverages (not the preggo girls though!)

Above left to right: DeEtta, Pat, me, my daughter Jenn, and Pat's daughter Christina (her husband Jesse refused to be in our group picture - can't imagine why!!) :-)

Here is another of Pat and I after we were feeling pretty relaxed and getting cozy with a tiki god totem pole (or whatever the heck that thing was...) I'm not sure what Pat's doing with her hand in its mouth...

All in all, it was an absolutely wonderful evening!

Minneapolis here I come!

This weekend I'll be flying to Minneapolis for some serious Christmas shopping at "The Mall". But the highlight of the trip will be visiting with some old Handleman friends - Pat Blees, DeEtta Marka and hopefully Barb Throngard as well. I may even get to see Bruce Daker too if he's not out chasing down bears or anything. :-)

I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and will post next week. Have a great weekend everyone!

From Pat Blees!

Hi Everyone from Pat Blees,
It has been a couple of months now since I have been off and I have to tell you that I am really enjoying life as it is. I am going to be a grandma again in April - my daughter and son in law are expecting and it is so fun to compare notes with Pam as her daughter Jen is expecting in April as well. Actually they are due within a week of each other. So that will make 3 grandkids come the Spring!!!! Lovin it!
During my spare time I am taking some computer courses, babysitting, shoveling my way thru the house and doing some major cleaning-that feels good too!
I truly miss everyone that I worked with - we had some very good times and I will always have great memories!!!!
As you know Robert and I met for lunch yesterday and what a site for sore eyes!!!!! Robert you look terrific - a little over dressed for the occasion but I didn't mind. Thanks again for meeting up with me and Pam I look forward to seeing you in December - you look terrific as well from the photo with Dennis-Dennis doesn't look bad neither.
Take care all!
Pat Blees

Its cold in Minnesota

Hi all I see Pam is hanging out with Dennis so I thought I would hang out with Pat, now Pat did tell me to bring a coat but I thought I could handle the 55 degree weather until the wind hit me. Then of course it drops to 38 degrees not good ; P It was good to hook up we had lunch and Pat, I blame the cold weather for my clutzy move dropping the dipping sauce all over the place. I think I even splattered the poor guy at the table next to us, Hu sorry my bad.

We're still here!

Pam checking in from St. Louis, Missouri - where I ran into an old friend! My husband, daughter and I met up with Dennis, his wife and mom at - where else? - the local Hooters Restaurant. :-)

It was great to see Dennis again!

In early December I'll be flying up to Minneapolis for a long weekend; I'm hoping to meet up with a few other friends from my Handleman days then too. Assuming we get some good pictures, I'll try to post a couple.

On the road again...update from Pam

BOO!! Okay, I just thought I'd see if you were awake or not. :-)

The Daleys are hitting the road tomorrow - first back down to southern California to spend some time with our daughter and a few friends (hi Robert!). Then we will be traveling across the country to relocate in Alabama. We'll be taking I-70 through America's 'heartland' - so if you know of any cool places to see, please let me know. We already have the Wizard of Oz Museum in Kansas on our schedule as well as that arch thingy in St. Louis (hi Dennis!).

I'm also planning a trip to Minneapolis the 2nd weekend in December to do some Christmas shopping (and again visit with some friends - hi Pat! hi DeEtta!). That trip will be by air though - I'm not crazy enough to think I want to drive to Minnesota in December!!

Hope everyone is doing well out there...we'd love to hear more from all of you. Take care!

Update from Jeff Seymour

Hey there Pam, Robert and everyone else out there in ex-HDL land. It’s Jeff Seymour from Omaha…err – Sioux Falls…no. Ummmmm – oh yeah, Shakopee, MN.

I am still working for Handleman – c’mon…everyone say it with me (you too Dave Y & Andy B!) Haaaandlemaaaannnnn. We all know what our real name is out in the field (the field – a place in which the aforementioned mgmt has not a clue of what is really happening). :-) Still with the mothership for now. Things are quite different since we officially merged – let’s see…is that a hard merge, a merge merge, soft merge, a merge with pickles and anchovies?

The transition from ADM to general peon/CNT has been smooth other than a few bumps in the road. It is approximately 120-130 miles from one end of my territory to another. I’ve lost count on how many stores I actually cover. Somewhat because I have missed so many visits over the past few weeks, but mostly because my territory keeps on growing. I’ve gone from trying to cover 350 hours for the month to over 600 hours in Oct.

Laura, my wife, and I (oh! And our kitty cat) have been in Minnesoooota for a little over 2 years. I have that northern accent in high gear too, don’cha know! It’s been nice, but we are trying to get out of here now. It’s been fun to a point, but we are trying to get back to Omaha soon. I had a chance to move with HDL and be in Marino’s district – oh nooooooooooooooooooo :-) (only kidding Shirley) – but I guess I thought HDL would shell out for the move again, which was not the case. So…we stay.

It’s been an interesting transition going from 120K in Sioux Falls to well over a million people in MN. It’s also pretty amusing making fun of the “professional” football team they like to call “da Vikings” – and their miserable season.

Quick (and fortunately or unfortunately true) story – a businessman from Denver gets drunk one evening. He is annoyed by the ducks that are swimming in the pond at the local Embassy Suites – inside the hotel. He chases and corners one into a corner, grabs it & (ok – gross part here) rips its head off – eeeeewwwww! He then turns around to the bystanders and proclaims “I’m hungry…and I’m gonna eat it!” And then to top it off, the radio finishes the story by saying “the man did not eat it”. Too funny!

By the way, I’m not sure how many reading this know. Larry Gelfund was also one of the people taken out by this recent round of corp layoffs. I don’t think that had been mentioned yet. Does anyone else think it’s stupid that we have 2 corporate offices? One in Troy, one in TN. Seems like we’re wasting money somewhere…but I just can’t quite put my finger on it. :-)

Well – that’s all I have to say about that. :-) I hope I wasn’t too negative in my blog debut. I really miss seeing everyone in the WBU family! Feel free to email me at my Handleman email. I suppose the I -T department will get all bent out of shape about that too.

Errrry-body B good!!! :-)

Note from Curt Cochran

Hi everyone,
Where does the time go. It seems like just yesterday that many of us were in Nashville having a big final bash. While I am not the type to look back a lot I will say that I miss a lot of people from the Handleman of old and I think this is a great idea.

I am still with the Handleman/REPS company in the position of Territory Manager/CNT (no comments Robert). I do very little traveling since my furthest store is 125 miles away and a TA does that Pilot store. I have a total of 6 part time TAs and the stores I service are all in the Salt Lake City area.

If you have not yet heard, Katie Bardoz and Doug Kuennen are no longer with the company. Katie was a casualty of the recent cutbacks and Doug retired effective 10-5-07. They will be missed.

My wife and I are starting to get the itch of the empty nest syndrome. My oldest two kids got married last spring and summer (3 months apart) so all we have left at home is the 15 year old. He started high school this year and has lettered in golf as a sophomore. He was ranked 3rd on the varsity team as a sophomore. I am still trying to fish as much as I can but gas prices have put a crimp in the regularity.

I pray that everyone is doing well and give a little extra love to Robert and Pam. I think of everyone often when I remember some of the great times we had together.

Take care.

Another sad day

Okay, when Robert and I set up this blog we were big on it being a positive place, not a lot of negative blah blah blah - but geez!! After yet another day of hearing about friends being laid off, I just have to wonder where this will all end??

I do believe there is life after Handleman - and a GOOD life - but being laid off is a bitch, to be blunt. Even when I had a date and KNEW when my job was ending it was still a really tough couple of weeks when it all finally happened. It's not the job - it's the people we lose having daily contact with that is hard.

I don't know what "the company" is doing, or where it will be in a month or a year; but it's almost like watching a train wreck (or Britney Spears) and just never knowing what's going to happen next. I know most folks will not want to 'vent' in a public blog, but the option is there if you want it - I'm certainly not going to moderate what you want to say. (Well, let's keep the swearing to a dull roar and watch the libel and slander-type stuff...) Otherwise, feel free.

And to those of you still there...man, watch your back...

Shirley Marino

Hi guys,

Just got back from another interesting meeting in Detroit. Lots going on but not much in music. My territory is now twice as big as it has ever been and I guess I can say the same about myself. I am now waiting for the appearance of my 5th grandchild, (talk about gettin old) not sure what it is, but it might as well be another girl so that I can have 5 granddaughters. My husband and I moved this summer to a small town north of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, so now I can't make fun ob Bob Howard living in Maynard Iowa, (damn that was fun though), we love it, it is so quiet compared to where we did live, we now have to run the fan at night for noise, instead of running it to cover up the noise, and we don't have to worry about somebody plowing down our trees with there cars in the winter when they come down the hill and miss the curve. Last year the Linn Co. Sheriff did it Plowed one down for us. I am glad to be able to keep up with all of our Handleman family. WBU's rock, and those of us who are still with will keep it rockin.

Work for Kellogg's Snacks which use to be called Keebler. I feel like I have gone full circle. I work full time, have a company car and drive all over the place. Humm just like Handleman! I was with Handleman from 1984 to 1998 when the frist big lay off hit. I miss everyone and was glad I was told about this site from Robert. If anyone wants to e-mail me, my address is debbie93433@hotmail.com Well I guess that is it for now. Hope to here from more of you. Take care Debbie

Staying in touch HDL 1991-2002

Wow where did time go??? Lots of people out there, where and doing what? It was quite a team! Myself, I left Handleman in 2002 after 11 years. Wanted to get off the road and work in Ridgecrest at a Home Improvement store (from music to hardware it was like learning a different language). Store closed, next I got back on the road as sales rep to a Heavy equipment rental center and off to Mammoth I went. I am now layed off due to constuction slow down. Taking advantage of unemployement.

Kids - all grown up and I now have 4 grandkids, like I said where has time gone>>???

Still keep in contact with Sheri Lewis and Debbie Lawson. Saw Russ Mcquire in Bakersfield he also was/is working for United Rentals.

It was sure a surprise to get this blog and check out some familiar faces... LOPER...MARY...PENNY....DENISE.....JIM.....AND OF COURSE ROBERT!!!!!

My email is zurnvvvv@yahoo.com I also have a spot on My space if you want to check out some pic's...

Great idea Pam,

Vegas anyone?

We've recently installed a "site meter" on this blog to help us see how many times each day someone, somewhere surfs on over to take a look. So far we've got an average of 6 visitors each day, each spending about 5 minutes reading and looking around. So I KNOW you guys are out there! :-) If you want to just lurk without posting any comments, that's okay - Robert and I will do our best to keep the site semi-interesting in between hearing from you.

So today is Sunday, September 9 and I am flying to Las Vegas for a couple of days. I'm meeting my middle daughter there to celebrate her 21st birthday (lord, I'm getting old). We will - of course - be hitting the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton (she's even more of a Trek fan than I am, if that's possible) and then I'm taking her to the "Thunder Down Under" show at Excaliber. Front row seats (not sure what I was thinking when I did that...) but it will definitely be a birthday to remember for her.

I will be flying back on Tuesday, so if anyone reading this happens to be hanging out in Vegas this weekend - drop me a note! I've always got my blackberry on - pamdaley@sprint.blackberry.net

Talk to you soon!

Hello from Tim in Kansas City!

Things are going OK with me and the family, it has been a rough last 2 months, my wife has had two major surgeries, a quadruple heart by pass in July and colon surgery two weeks ago. My wife is doing better now that she is at home.

The new job is going OK but have wacky hours, that is how retail is, I am still looking for something where I can work Monday thru Friday.

Great to see a way that we all can keep in touch, I will see if I can dig up some photos, I think I have a few.I will keep in touch and let everyone know how things are going. If anyone wants to get in touch with me my email address is musicman31056@yahoo.com.

Talk to you soon.

Way to get the family reunion going! You guys are great.

Pam, sending all good vibes your way and hoping for your speedy recovery. Let me know how Ireland is, always wanted to go there, just the whole flying over that much water thing holding me back, and, I STILL haven't won the Powerball jackpot, which is directly related to the fact that I am still working for Handleman, figuring on riding this horse until it drops or I pick the right numbers. I'm still past the end of the Earth-South Dakota.

No kids still- there are ways to prevent that nowdays, but I do have a pregnant dog. She's a 9 years old yellow/red lab and we have reason to believe the father is a two year old yellow lab. Her name is Lady, and, yes, she's a tramp. Puppies are due in a couple of weeks. So get your orders in soon!

Saturday, August 25, 2007

Okay folks....

I'm hearing via email that a lot of you are checking the blog here, but not posting a hello. C'mon!! We want some active posters, not just lurkers - so if you're having trouble posting your comments, just drop me an email and I'll walk you through how to get your words of wisdom front and center, okay?? Okay! :-)

Otherwise you're going to have to read stuff from me all the time, and that'll get boring I'm sure. Let us know what you've done this summer (or what you DIDN'T do for once), any plans for the Holidays (I'm planning a trip to Minneapolis in early December and a trip to England and Ireland in February - assuming my cancer cooperates!).

And pictures - we want pictures! Not just of Handleman times, but you - your family - your latest 'catch' (I'm talking animal or fish here...).

From Jennifer

Hey Everyone! This is Pam's daughter, Jennifer. Just thought I'd say hi, since I am "technically" an ex-employee, too! Glad to see everyone is keepingin touch! If you want more news on me, check out my blog - http://thearmywifelife.blogspot.com.

Til next time,

Who ARE these people??

Friday, August 17, 2007

Okay Robert and Pam, I'm here - now what??

Hey - we're glad you stopped by the new blog!! You've got a couple of options as to how to post an entry here.

First - you can just make a comment to this post. At the bottom of these paragraphs is a link that says "comments". If you click on that, a window will open up with a box to type in whatever you'd like to say. When you're done, there will be a button that says "publish post" at the bottom left. Click on that and boom! You've posted to the blog! :) The downside is that you can't post pictures in a comment posting - and we want pictures!

So the second way to post on here is to send me an email (my address is at the top of the page - pamdaley@earthlink.net) and I will add you as an "approved poster". That means you would be able to log on to the site and post an entry just like this one - including photos like this - (this is my grandson and his daddy) -

We would love to see pictures of your kids, grandkids, and most especially YOU.

But if all this sounds like too much of a hassle and makes you think about just forgetting the whole thing, PLEASE just go ahead and email me whatever you'd like to say, and whatever pictures you'd like to share, and I'll be glad to post it all for you. (Hey, I'm sitting around doing nothing but waiting for my next chemo so what the heck.)

So who's going to be first? :-)

Thursday, August 16, 2007

Welcome!

Robert and I thought we'd see if there is any interest in a blog for those of us who are former Handleman employees. Just a place to check in once in a while, let friends know how and what you're doing these days. So many of us worked together for several years (some a lot more than others!) and we are family. We've been through some fantastically fun times, and some dreadfully tough times - but we are still family.

If you are new to blogging, the easiest way for you to catch us up on your life is to post a comment to this entry. (See at the bottom of this post? There is a little link that says "x-number comments" - just click on that and you'll be able to type a comment. Don't forget to sign it so we know who you are!) If you are more familiar with blogging or would like to be able to post directly to this site, just drop me an email and I will add you to the site as an "approved author". (Admit it - that sounds like fun, right?)

Hope to hear from you soon!

Pam Daley
